The Make & Keeper of Family Images

Tips for Photographing Grandparents and Grandchildren

Kristin Boyer, Family Photographer, Lifestyle

As the maker and keeper of family images, any visit with Grandparents is a chance to add to the photographic history of your family and it is practically mandatory (and always worth whatever it takes) to get it done.  We all know it is not easy to get all the generations to cooperate and make things run smoothly. :).

This is my family... my mother and father as well as my daughters, my nephews and in laws. I post this to show that you don't need a photo shoot appointment in order to make great images.  Just find some shade, MAKE people smile (hee hee) and snap away.  Group photos and portraits are just as important as the fun candid snapshots that show laughter and simplicity.   I am thrilled that I took a few extra minutes during our summer gatherings to take these photos.  My daughters even took one of me!  :). Gotta love that because Mom (me) is always behind the camera and never i Outdoor family photos during Father's Day celebration with teenage daughters and their grandparentsFather's Day in Big Canoe 2017 Father's Day Luncheon in Big Canoe Jasper GA, Family, Grandchildren & Grandparents Photography, 2017, Kristin Boyer, Atlanta Family Photographer, n front of it!

A few tips to keep in mind when photographing children & grandparents:

  • Group photos are critical so you can see the different  generations but also make time for one on one photos with kids & grandparents
  • Capture the candid images when their guard is down and everyone is relaxed... these are often the best and you'll fall in love with them
  • Don't miss the details - focus on the little things and look for the details.  For example, the young hands in the palm of a grandparents hand
  • Let them pose themselves and then gently redirect as necessary.  Let them stand or sit together naturally and then fine tune the details, make sure they are touching each other and there are no awkward gaps between people.  Also, make sure that all the little ones are visible!

My girls and their cousins....one of my tricks and my frequent requests is to have everyone hug each other nice and close...  this always creates genuine laughter!
