Where do we begin? 

Up to date and high quality photos are essential for getting acting and modeling jobs for kids.  With online casting, people are putting up 4 to 6 shots per child which allows for some versatility in outfits and photographs.  We will take a variety of shots from tight headshots, 3/4 shots and some full body shots as an ad agency or modeling agency will need them all at some point.

A few tips to keep in mind for a headshot session for children.

1)  Bright colors are great for children, oranges, reds, blues, greens.  Try to pick one that matches their eye color and / or select a color that complements their skin tone. Keep it simple.

2)  Try to pick outfits that reflect different looks.  For example a little girl might bring a tomboy outfit of jeans, t-shirt and a ball cap, a simple dress, a "sweet" outfit with a cardigan etc.  This shows the versatility of the child.   Do not get anything too frilly, busy or complicated, no buttons, logos or busy patterns.  The focus needs to be on the child and their face, not the outfit. All of their looks need to be complete from head to toe as feet can and will be in images of children.

3)  Schedule your shoot at a time that is great for the child.  Avoid their nap time or "the witching hour" (in my house that was around 4:30 or 5 p.m.)

4)  Avoid giving your child any sugar before a shoot.  We can not expect them to pay attention and take photos for an hour or more if they are hyped up on sugar and just want to run and play outside.  

5)  Make sure they have a good nights sleep and have had a healthy breakfast with protein.  Eggs and toast are great to start the morning off and give them good stamina to be able to "play" for awhile.

Studio & Outdoors:  

At my studio, I will do a combination of studio shots as well as outdoor shots (weather permitting).  Backgrounds will always be blurred if outdoors or if in the studio, a simple, plain backdrop so the emphasis is on the child.

Hair & Make UP:

Hair should be styled as the child normally wears it... brushed and neat but natural.  Generally I do not suggest makeup for kids under 12.  Kids need to look and act like kids. I prefer all natural for children.  

We will do close up headshots, cropped using the rule of thirds so sometimes heads will be "cut off".  I will also do a variety of full length photos of the child.  Typically, headshots need to be redone every 6 or 8 months for child actors as they change so quickly.
