The Ray's -- An Amazing Atlanta Band
Photographing an Atlanta Band... Father's Husbands & Friends.
An amazing group of men, husbands, fathers and friends. A number of years ago, these men started playing music together and it took off. Over the last several years, they had so much fun and are so good that they have quickly become a hit sensation and are playing at various venues around town. They have played at Piedmont Park, at Gainsborough Pool (where they originally got their name "The Rays" for the Gainsborough Stingrays Swim Team), at various brewrey's around Atlanta and even in Athens, Ga! One of the best and most beautiful venues is right over in Dunwoody at the Dunwoody Nature Center. They have a summer concert series and The Ray's are regular's there. I was asked to photograph them for a magazine cover profiling this band and it was great fun for me to organize a photo shoot like this.
The first thing...Location, Location, Location...Where should we go shoot? They are all from the Murphey Candler Park area in Brookhaven so that was a natural location to pick and made the most sense in terms of who this band IS.
The Golden Hour. We also shot at the end of a winter day. You can tell by the light falling all around them and the reason it is called the Golden Hour! It could not have been more beautiful!! They were all willing to climb on and over anything I suggested. :) They balanced precariously around rocks by the lake, climbed on the old vacant clubhouse deck and posed by the banks of the lake and never batted an eye. What an awesome crew!! One of the best parts about this shoot is that they were actually playing when I was photographing them. We wanted realistic photographs so they played, I photographed, they gathered an impromptu audience and we all had a blast.
Gear... What's in my camera bag? In this instance, I shot with a 5D Mark ii and used a couple of different lenses. When they were across the water I shot with my Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lens. It is one of my all time favorites for the creamy background and tack sharp images. I also used my canon 24-70 mm 2.8 lens. This is a great all purpose lens and one of my go to's on nearly every shoot. Because we were losing light quickly, I also used a off camera flash and have an alien bee's 800 light with a softbox and HUGE battery back that will last long after anyone is still wanting to take photographs. That's about it!
They will be playing this weekend at 12:30 at Gainsborough Pool in Chamblee GA. You don't want to miss it!
